Combining UX and Tech Specialists

Challenge

Paradox Interactive is a world leading PC games publisher known for games such as Cities: Skylines, Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings.

Paradox had an existing modding platform that required modifications to attract a new target audience. They aimed to enable users to modify their game while staying in the game and sought our support with UX design, asset library enhancement, design principle establishment, and tech support to enhance the user experience. Tretton37 worked closely with Paradox's team to deliver a comprehensive solution that not only met their immediate needs but also established a solid foundation for their future endeavors.

Solution

tretton37 began by deploying a cross-functional team of six experts to revamp Paradox's existing modding platform, enabling it to seamlessly integrate with the current game and offer a native in-game experience. To achieve this, we created a new web-based UI that could be easily navigated using a controller, mouse, and keyboard. Additionally, we developed an admin tool and web-based API that could be linked to the mod. Our team followed an agile methodology with three-week sprints and short iterations to obtain regular feedback and ensure timely software delivery. As part of our support, we also aided the UX design team and established effective design processes to help the Player Services department achieve success.

Result

tretton37 made significant improvements to the visibility of designers' work, boosting productivity and solidifying the toolkit, ultimately leading to cost savings. For the department/product, we created the first-ever designs for Xbox and an equivalent batch for PC. Furthermore, we established guidelines for "Designing for Xbox and TV," based on Microsoft's design principles. Our efforts also enhanced the user experience of the Mods website and contributed to the growth of the UX design team by creating their first career paths and assisting with the hiring of the team's first UX Lead. The modifications we made to the existing modding platform successfully drew in a new target audience, resulting in increased engagement and revenue for Paradox.
